Leon Anderson, Jr. – drummer • composer • educator • bandleader Melvin Jones, trumpet Mace Hibbard, saxophone Louis Hereveaux, piano Kaleb Thompkins, bass Born in Shreveport, Louisiana to a family of music educators, Leon has carried his rhythmic genius from his earliest days on snare drum with the Peppermints marching team to his decades of experience performing worldwide. His influences run the spectrum—Debussy to Duke, Motown to Miles, Coltrane to Prince—and his playing tells the full story of jazz’s past, present, and future. Over his career, Leon has shared the stage with jazz greats including Wynton Marsalis, Ellis Marsalis, Dianne Reeves, Donald Harrison, Bobby McFerrin, Terence Blanchard, Hank Jones, Dr. John, and countless others. He’s lit up major international festivals from Umbria to North Sea, worked with symphony orchestras from New Orleans to Prague, and built one of the country’s strongest jazz drumset programs as Professor of Jazz Drumset at Florida State University. Now, with LIVE @ SNUG HARBOR (2025), Leon steps into the spotlight as bandleader and composer, delivering a debut recording that’s as bold, soulful, and swinging as his career has been. Recorded in one of New Orleans’ most legendary jazz venues, this album is a living, breathing testament to the heartbeat of jazz.
