PRETTY DARN

Fri, Feb 07

Show Ticket $20 - $25 Dinner is required with all reservations. *6:30 PM SHOW - DINNER RESERVATIONS FROM 5:15 PM *9:00 PM SHOW - DINNER RESERVATIONS FROM 8:00 PM Kyle Wareham - Guitar/Vocals Nick Poulin - Guitar/Vocals Nate Douglas - Percussion Matt Robbins - Bass/Vocals Pretty Darn combines heartfelt songwriting with stunning harmonies to create a truly magical musical experience. Whether you're a longtime fan or new to their sound, this is a show you won't want to miss! Like many things, it all started on an island... Kyle Wareham, singer/guitarist from Philly indie favorites Three Legged Fox, and his wife Nikki decided they were ready for a change of scene in their lives, so they packed their gear and their beloved dogs and headed south to Hilton Head, a small resort island located in the South Carolina lowcountry. Shortly after his arrival, Kyle discovered that Hilton Head had a very large and very inclusive local music community. He soon began playing out with several different musicians, and it wasn’t long until he crossed paths with Nick “No Foolin’” Poulin. Nick Poulin is a native son of Hilton Head with a truly original, unique voice that made him a wildly popular up-and-coming singer/songwriter. He cut his teeth in his teen years performing at church services and open mic nights, and soon after began sharing the stage with some of Hilton Head’s most prominent acts, as well as becoming an in-demand solo act for the island’s most well-established live music venues. It was inevitable that Nick and Kyle would soon cross paths, but neither knew that a true musical brotherhood was about to be forged. And so Pretty Darn was born, a live good vibes duo featuring dual guitars and percussion, anchored by Nick and Kyle’s perfect soulful harmonies. Drawing heavily from a myriad of influences including Bob Marley, Bruce Springsteen, Citizen Cope, and so many more, their shows are a unique combination of rock and reggae covers, as well as a generous sampling of their prolific original work. It’s a bonfire on the beach with friends, a lazy day in the hammock with your dog, a road trip down the coast with brothers and sisters. It’s drinking and dancing, love and laughter, friends and family. It’s Pretty Darn. And it’s pretty cool.

I love hearing him play! It’s happy music with tasty meat on the bones! Although much younger than I, he is an inspiration to me! His piano playing, his will to explore and his ability to swing is a joy to behold.” - Ramsey Lewis “Joe is tiny, but only in stature. As a man and a musician he is already a giant. He’s on a ‘blow your mind’ level.” - Les McCann “Having known Joe Alterman on a personal level, I can attest to the fact that he is a very special artist.” - Ahmad Jamal “Pianist Joe Alterman pulls off one of the rarer feats in modern jazz: he swings — hard.” – Downbeat Magazine Atlanta native Joe Alterman expresses a certain upbeat naivete, with a broad smile and bright eyes that make you feel welcome. One would not guess that this is a man hailed by greats; Ramsey Lewis describes his music as "happy music with tasty meat on the bones," Les McCann states "Joe's on a 'blow your mind' level," and Ahmad Jamal calls him "a very special artist." Journalist Nat Hentoff championed three of Alterman’s albums, as well as his writing (Joe wrote liner notes to three Wynton Marsalis/JLCO albums), calling one of Joe’s columns “one of the very best pieces on the essence of jazz, the spirit of jazz, that I’ve ever read, and I’m not exaggerating.” Joe Alterman began at NYU with a BA and Masters in Jazz Piano from NYU and has since performed at many world renowned venues including the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, Birdland and Blue Note alongside Houston Person, Les McCann, Dick Gregory, Ramsey Lewis, and his own trio, among others. Downbeat describes his sound as “rooted in the blues, and with a touch reminiscent of the great pianists of the 1950s—Red Garland, Ahmad Jamal, Bill Evans.” It is clear Joe hits all of the necessary points for Jazz critics and fans alike. But there is more to the story, of course. The 21st century has brought another transition for this thing called jazz; in one moment we see the push and pull between tradition and progression, and in another we see Pop and Hip-Hop musicians emulating and sampling. In Joe Alterman we find none of this struggle; the music just sounds good. Our conscious faculties are instantly disabled as we tap our feet, feeling the intent and joy of his playing. An old classic is new when you feel good in the moment. Or, as Hentoff wrote about Alterman in the Wall Street Journal, "Alterman’s continually evolving presence on the jazz scene surely makes people smile and, if the room is right, dance. There’ll be no need for any last rites of jazz.”

Highly endorsed by none other than Pat Metheny, Wilson’s reputation as a first-rate jazz guitarist has permeated the walls of the elite in the upper echelon of jazz guitar. This Grammy-nominated artist has already cemented his place as a world-class player, and his recent exploits show that he has no plans of slowing down." - Jazz Guitar Today Traces of Wilson's major guitar influences – including Wes Montgomery, Charlie Christian, Joe Pass, and George Benson to name a few – can be discerned through his playing, but his musical identity has been shaped by everything from gospel and blues to traditional jazz, hip-hop and horn players like Sonny Rollins and Joe Henderson. After graduating from Hiram College, Wilson made his recording debut with pianist Joe McBride and performed to worldwide acclaim with Joey DeFrancesco and Christian McBride’s Tip City, eventually recording his debut as a leader To Whom It May Concern. Wilson has had the honor of sharing the stage with jazz greats including Eric Marienthal, Russell Malone, Les McCann, René Marie, Jeff Hamilton, David Sanborn and Dave Stryker. He also teaches jazz guitar and music theory through private lessons. Wilson’s career took him on an exploratory journey into foundations laid down by the guitar/organ tradition, eventually leading to an invitation to perform with jazz great Joey DeFrancesco’s trio quartet, with which Wilson went on to earn a GRAMMY® Award nomination with for DeFrancesco’s Project Freedom album (Mack Avenue Records, 2017). This collaboration allowed the guitarist to insert his own dialect into the musical prowess and respect that DeFrancesco had earned throughout his journey. Wilson had been playing with DeFrancesco for a few years when he met bassist, composer, arranger, Christian McBride. From there, Wilson went on to tour with McBride’s trio Tip City, eventually leading McBride to serve as producer on "Vessels of Wood and Earth" and release the album on his newly formed imprint Brother Mister Productions through Mack Avenue Music Group. The album was released on April 23, 2021 and is available on all platforms.

Two-Time GRAMMY Nominee CYRILLE AIMEE with Pianist/Composer MATHIS PICARD

Fri, Mar 07

Show Ticket $30 Dinner is required with all reservations. *6:30 PM SHOW - DINNER RESERVATIONS FROM 5:15 PM *9:00 PM SHOW - DINNER RESERVATIONS FROM 8:00 PM Cyrille's talents quickly gained her a reputation among her peers as a fearless, warm, witty improviser and a matchless interpreter of song: she performed and recorded with Roy Hargrove, stole the show in front of the notoriously hard-to-please crowd at the Harlem Apollo, and won a string of competitions culminating in First Prize at the Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. A contract with Mack Avenue Records, the home of many of the US premier league jazz artists, resulted in two highly acclaimed albums which attracted the attention of one of the premier league songwriters - Steven Sondheim. The musical theatre icon invited her to star alongside the legendary Bernadette Peters in an Encores Special Presentation tribute at New York’s City Centre in November 2013, backed by Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Centre Orchestra, which was hailed by the New York Daily News as “a revelation.” Her 2019 album Move On featured versions of Sondheim’s songs which received praise from Sondheim himself, and one of its songs, "Marry Me a Little", was nominated for a 2019 Grammy Award. Starting in 2020, she reached out into the digital realm via a string of YouTube video collabs with the pianist and jazz influencer Emmet Cohen, and their version of ‘La Vie enRose’ has been viewed more than 7 million times to date. At the height of her New York success, new horizons beckoned. A growing interest in sharing her vision of the interaction of spontaneity and creativity, and the importance of community, led to her developing her ideas into a TEDx Talk about the laws of improvisation and how they apply to life. A visit to New Orleans resulted in her falling in love with the city and moving there in 2017. NO’s unique mix of Latin, French and African-American Jazz heritage allowed her to fully explore all the sides of her own musical identity, freeing her to look beyond the constrictions of genre and to engage with her own inner creativity. Energized, unstoppable, in 2021 she bought a plot of land in the forests of Costa Rica, designed and built a house on it, and there in the calm of the forest started putting together material for a new project: songs drawn from her own life, encompassing every aspect of her journey so far. Linking back to New York to connect up all the dots, she teamed up with producer/multi-instrumentalist Jake Sherman, and together they have created her latest album, Grammy Nominated à Fleur de Peau. It’s a set of songs that show a new side to Cyrille’s persona: one that encompasses her love of storytelling truth and musical freedom, drawing on all sides of her heritage. Combining the depth and sophistication of jazz, the immediacy of pop, the irrepressible dance rhythms of the Caribbean, it’s at once more intimate and more accessible than anything Cyrille has done before. Mathis Picard is a French-Malagasy pianist, composer, producer, and bandleader who currently resides in New York City. A student of both Jazz & Classical music from an early age, Mathis creates a his own musical style that is influenced by his multi-national background. Mathis, who began playing the piano at the age of 3, was immediately passionate about music's healing quality and now focuses on sharing that passion globally. Mathis currently leads a solo project, a trio project and his orchestra, "The Sound Orchestra". Mathis has had the honor of working with artists such as Ron Carter, Lillias White, Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Cyrille Aimee, Lee Ritenour, Daniel J Watts, Herlin Riley, DJ Kindness, Braxton Cook, Veronica Swift, Etienne Charles and more.

As a solo leader he has issued Aria (2015), Moments Preserved (2018) and Solo Game (2024) to critical acclaim, the lattermost receiving 4-star reviews in DownBeat and France’s Telerama Magazine. Slated for release in 2025, his forthcoming trio recording Southern Nights features Peter Washington and Marcus Gilmore. Fortner’s artistry preserves the tradition and evolves the sound. He seeks connections among different musical styles that are at once deeply soulful and wildly inventive. Both his works and his insights have been featured in culture drivers from The New York Times to The Root. Further accolades include the 2015 Cole Porter Fellowship awarded by the American Pianists Association, Leonore Annenberg Arts Fellowship, the 2016 Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists, the prestigious Shifting Foundation Grant in 2020 for artistic career development and the 2024 Western Jazz Presenters grant, which allowed him to tour the west coast with his trio.

In 2019, Fortner brought his band to the historic Village Vanguard for a week-long engagement he would reprise in 2020 as a virtual performance during lockdown. His notable studio contributions include work on Etienne Charles’s Kaiso (Culture Shock, 2011), Donald Harrison’s Quantum Leap (FOMP, 2010), and Theo Croker’s The Fundamentals (Left Sided Music, 2007).
